There is a special type of generator called an electronic variable speed generator set, in which changing the speed of the engine changes the speed of the alternator, which automatically produces an output of variable frequency. The varying generator output is then rectified using a frequency converter to match the desired output frequency of 50 Hz or 60 Hz.

Using this device eliminates the need for variable speed drives and transformers. The disadvantage of this technique is that, in addition to being expensive, the electronic components are not suitable for use in the harsh environments where the generator works properly.
