The renovation of the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen was special in many ways, and in some ways unique, “said Niklas Philipson, design engineer at Visual Act. “We can learn from the experience gained by the Norwegian Theatre in Oslo in upgrading its flight systems.” The project was completed in just six weeks over the summer break, also using Sprint Electric’s digital DC drive, which helped save eight tons of cable. “Often, old DC machines are replaced with AC motors, but we have a lot of experience in keeping them. This is a cost-effective way to do it because DC motor drives have very good capacity and durability.” Niklas Philipson explains. For the old stage of the Royal Danish Theatre, new drives and electronics were installed to control the DC motors on the 36 fly rod winches. To monitor the fly rod position, new devices with Angle gears, absolute encoders and limit switches are installed on each winch. Two Profibus communication channels are provided, one for the driver and the other for absolute encoder and secure I/O. The onboard software module of Sprint Electric’s PLX drive is widely used to facilitate the development of complex systems and incorporates closed-loop positioning loops specifically for Visual Act. Six existing lighting Bridges have been upgraded to increase the load capacity to 800 kg. This involves replacing the motor, gearbox and brakes. New electrical cabinets with servo amplifiers and electronics were also installed. Relaxation line detection is added to improve safety. The optical bridge encoder is also fitted with an angular gear device similar to that used on the fly rod. The rotary table was inspected and new encoders were installed, and very old motors were removed to improve efficiency and reduce the risk of fire. The delivery also includes four new removable point hoists; The single point hoist has a separate control cabinet with an electrical structure similar to that of the optical bridge control cabinet, which is also connected to the control system via Profibus.
