ABB has released a universal Remote input/Output (I/O) module for its Security Manager platform, allowing process manufacturers to integrate more security devices while simplifying installation and maintenance. The module is ideal for facilities that must cost-effectively integrate equipment, installations and other assets distributed over a wide geographical distance, such as upstream applications in the oil and gas industry. Plants and refineries use Honeywell’s Safety Instrumentation System (SIS) platform safety manager to protect their assets and share critical safety information with process control systems. The system helps them prevent and mitigate safety incidents by protecting equipment, monitoring fire and gas leaks, and maintaining critical control functions. The new Safety Manager Remote I/O module is designed for the harsh environments common in offshore oil and gas operations, such as production platforms located in extreme climate zones from the North Slope of Alaska to tropical Southeast Asia. The growing concern for safety has led to a greater need for SIL(Safety Integrity Level) certification systems that can operate in these harsh environmental conditions. The remote I/O module of the security Manager is SIL-3 certified by tuV Rhineland. The new remote I/O module also helps factories more easily scale security manager solutions.

Typical I/O modules are connected to the control room via junction boxes and marshalling cabinets. By using soft marshalling, Honeywell Security Manager remote I/O modules can be installed close to the processing unit, eliminating the need for marshalling panels and local cables, and reducing or eliminating on-site auxiliary chambers. This reduces total capital expenditure, engineering costs, as well as maintenance costs. Each channel of a common high-density module can be individually configured for a different IO type, giving manufacturers greater flexibility to design a security solution that fits their needs exactly.
