The 44A730240-G01 AC excitation system consists of an alternator and a thyristor rectifier bridge directly connected to the main alternator shaft. The main exciter can be self-excited or separately excited. Ac excitation systems can be broadly divided into two categories, which are described in detail below.

Rotating thyristor excitation system

The 44A730240-G01 rotor excitation system is shown in the following figure. The rotation is surrounded by dotted lines. The system consists of AC exciter, fixed magnetic field and rotating armature. The output of the exciter is rectified by a full-wave thyristor bridge rectifier circuit and fed to the main alternator field winding.

The 44A730240-G01 alternator field winding is also fed through another rectifier circuit. The exciter voltage can be established by using its residual flux. Power and rectifier controls generate controlled trigger signals. Alternator voltage signals are averaged and compared directly to operator voltage adjustments in automatic operation mode. In manual operation mode, the alternator’s excitation current is compared with a separate manual voltage regulation.
