The logical slot arrangement of the Tricon chassis provides two methods for online module repair: the hot spare disk method and online module replacement. Using the hot spare disk method, a logical slot contains two identical I/O modules. When one module is active, the other module is powered on but inactive. Tricon cycles between two healthy I/O modules approximately once an hour so that each module performs a complete diagnosis on a regular basis.
If a failure is detected on one module, Tricon automatically switches control to the other, enabling the system to maintain three health channels in a row. The faulty module can then be removed and replaced. Alternatively, even if only one I/O module is usually installed in the logical slot, modules can be replaced online. If a fault occurs, the fault indicator lights up, but the module remains active on both channels. Then insert the replacement module into the unused space in the slot.
Tricon will grant control of the second I/O module after it passes a diagnostic test. Once the replacement input/output module is activated, the faulty module can be removed. This repair method proves that the Tricon controller is able to automatically convert from triple control to double control and again without interrupting the process. Tricon systems should include at least one hot standby module for each type of I/O module in the system. With this arrangement, hot spare modules can be tested regularly and can be used for online module replacement anywhere in the system.
