Concern about upgrading and migrating existing systems with new technologies is another key issue for existing plants and plants. Manufacturing plants are not allowed to replace ICS industrial control systems that have been installed and operated for many years at full scale, which can be very disruptive to operations. The ability to access so much data, as well as analyze it and transform it into active, actionable information, is a critical business requirement. Enterprises are crying out for APPs that enable analytics from the system to the edge to the cloud, but it’s not that easy to do right now. Suppliers’ solutions to the problem seem to be lagging far behind. Let me give you a realistic example. The United States ExxonMobil has used Honeywell’s DCS system TDC 3000 in large quantities, and the spare parts of these systems that have been in service for 20 or 30 years can be used until 2025. It took so long to achieve this technically, and the cost can be imagined. Several years ago, ExxonMobil’s research and engineering department publicly advocated the development of a standards-based process control architecture. In 2014, they created a basic feature document, which was distributed at the ARC Forum in 2015, and received considerable attention, heated discussion, and support from other end users with similar requirements. Because of The Open Group’s record and success in creating standards for other industrial sectors, ExxonMobil decided to commission this non-profit third party to organize a new standardization campaign to develop a new set of standards for the business and technical challenges in the process control industry.
